The Shearwater Festival is an annual event that aims to develop partnerships, cross cultural understanding and environmental awareness about the short-tailed shearwater population of Phillip Island.
Phillip Island is home to a colony of short-tailed shearwater birds. Each year in April/May, the shearwaters migrate north, across the Western Pacific, to the Bering Sea around the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, USA.
In September/October, the birds return to South-East Australia, where they breed over the summer months.
Short-tailed shearwaters are an important aspect of local indigenous culture.
